Six cows headed for slaughter in St. Louis have been taken in by local animal sanctuary The Gentle Barn.

Six cows escaped Minnesota slaughterhouse Star Packing Company last week through an open gate. The cows led police on a chase for several hours through north St. Louis before being captured and returned to the slaughterhouse. The chase gained national news coverage and after negotiation with Star Packing Company, animal sanctuary The Gentle Barn was able to relocate the cows to its facilities. The Gentle Barn is asking local animal rescue organizations for help as they lack the space necessary (approximately 20 to 50 acres of land) to house the cows. Concerned citizen Adam Brewer created a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe—which has raised more than $17,000 since the incident—to help cover costs at the animal sanctuary which will ultimately house the cows. Last year, comedian Jon Stewart and his vegan wife Tracey helped rescue bull Frank Lee—who currently resides at the flagship Watkins Glen branch of non-profit organization Farm Sanctuary—after he escaped from a New York slaughter facility.
