News of a police chief callously killing a child’s pet chicken is circulating this week, following a complaint filed against the Minnesota police department by the boy’s mother.
According to an article published by The Huffington Post, the chicken had been a birthday gift for her son. His mother admits that she had received notice about violating a local ordinance but said “there was no reason to beat her son’s chicken to death with a shovel before decapitating it.”
“The chicken was like a puppy dog to my son,” Turnbull told the publication. “You wouldn’t do that to a puppy.”
The cop in question eventually made a public apology, claiming he had not realized this chicken was a companion to the boy.
Children are naturally empathetic to animal suffering, and tragic cases like this one remind us that the arbitrary distinctions made between animals we call pets, and others we call food, are just that.
